Geography: |
| Climate:
The Districts altitude ranges from 1.145 to 1.800 mt. above sea level. The Districts have an inland equatorial climate. The climate is however modified by the effects of altitude, and nearness to Lake Victoria, which makes temperatures lower than in the equatorial climate. It receives an annual rainfall ranging from 700 to 800 mm. This amount is lower than what is received in a tropical equatorial climate as it is caused by the convergence of the Westerlies and South East winds which causes high downpours in the afternoons. The rainfall received in the long rains seasons is 60% reliable and ranges from 250-1.000mm. while 500-700 mm. is received in the short rains. The long rains start in the late February – March while the short rains start as early as August –November. The Districts receive varying amounts of rainfall. The long rains are more reliable in the Eastern parts of Homa-Bay District like Oyugis Division, parts of Rangwe and in Migori District like Rongo and parts of Uriri and central Division and is most unreliable near the lake. The rainfall reliability declines towards the western parts of Homa-Bay District like Ndhiwa, Mbita and Rangwe and in Migori District like Nyatike and parts of Uriri and Central Division, which reduces the cropping period |
